Why I live where I live: a poem

By JOY STEER
My little house in the Wimmera is as cosy as can be, and the land around is flat as far as the eye can see.
Kangaroos come to my paddocks and there’s birds everywhere.
The flowers in my garden bring me so much flair.
The walls are covered in birds, animals and flowers, and where we live we don’t get many showers.
A piano to play so I can sing each day.
Games are there so it’s good to share with mates.
Writing I like to do poetry too to send to friends.
I collect rocks and have a table full of them.
I quite often look at them and remember where I’ve bin.
I have two chooks one lays an egg.
When it’s hot I throw a bucket of water in their shed.
I have two plovers on my dam, sometimes white eyed herons call as they cross my land.
My kangaroo has a joey in her pouch.
It’s so heavy it causes her to slouch.
She drinks out of my birdbath then eats the green grass.
She doesn’t seem to mind if I walk past.
I have good neighbors they call in now and then.
It’s good to get together everyone needs a friend.
So come to my place you are welcome any time, as everybody who ever can become a friend of mine.
