On Boxing Day Tom and Bobbie Driscoll and family of Navarre, lost their home and all their processions in a fire while they were at a dance in Barkly.
An appeal will run for a month and donations may be left with Mrs Norma Hannett.
Sixty people celebrated Australia Day at Pioneer Park where Scout Vaughn Schulz raised the Australian flag and St Arnaud State School Principal Doug Beasy gave a short address.
St Arnaud’s new medical practitioner Dr A J Rundle will commence practise in his temporary surgery at the Nurse’s Home of the St Arnaud and District Hospital.
The Stuart Mill Post Office closed on January 30th and local residents made a small presentation to the Postmistress Mrs Mollie Frohlich.
A very large crowd attended the St Arnaud Trotting Clubs Summer Meeting at Lord Nelson Park over the Australia Day long weekend.
A feature of the ten event programme was the heat of the Central Victorian Championships, which was won by “Roi Noir’ driven by R Junor with ‘Rebel’s Way’ driven by A Douglas two metres behind.
The annual fishing competition held over the Australia Day long weekend between St Arnaud and Charlton was won by St Arnaud with a total weight of 50 lbs 12 ozs to Charlton’s 19 lbs 8 0zs.
St Arnaud trophies went to C Fletcher for biggest fish, E Evans biggest bag, N James ladies prize and Bert Pritchard secret weight.
Also over the long weekend at Sale, St Arnaud swimmer, Janne Macgowan became the Victorian Country Champion for the 100 metres breaststroke.

Warriors 197 defeat Coonooer Bridge 35 with most runs for Warriors J Jess 80 & R Pole 32 and for Coonooer Bridge L Postlethwaite 25 & P Watts 10.
Colts 92 defeat Jeffcott 37 with most runs for Colts by Shane Swanton 26 and Phillip Hoare 16 and for Jeffcott, ? Brennan 21 and G Davidson 17.
