Walklate’s legacy cemented in street name

MARY and Brian Walklate are set to become a permanent fixture in Charlton following a unanimous vote at a recent council meeting.
Buloke Shire councillors voted to accept a request from the Charlton Forum to rename the west end of Davies Street to Walklate Lane to honour the late Dr Walklate whom served as a beloved Doctor to the Charlton area for many years.
The section of Davies Street that has been identified for renaming is from High Street to John Curtin Drive, which is a laneway running along the Avoca riverbank.
Cr Bruce Stafford agreed with the suggested name, saying it was a fitting tribute considering all the couple had given to the community.
“Dr Walklate is remembered with great respect in Charlton and this is a simple but meaningful way to recognise his contributions to the community,” he said. “The proposed name has a clear connection to the place given the former location of his surgery.”
The submission received both support and opposition from the community. One submitter opposed, saying the remaning should include the section of the road identified as an extension of John Curtain Drive.
Council responded saying the proposed name had a link to that section because of the location of the surgery in the western part of the road. Another suggested an alternative name: Brian Walklate Lane. Council said they tend to use surnames only. Cr Alan Getley said that decision also honoured Mary’s contributions too.
“Doc did a hell of a lot for Charlton, but his wife Mary did a lot for the community too,” he said.
All councillors voted for the change.
