The Tigers lost to Wedderburn before the King’s Birthday long weekend bye, but seven goals to four after the main break kept them in second place on the ladder behind the unbeaten Redbacks.
Dual Feeny Medal winner Wade Donnan was back in form after a rare quiet outing against Wedderburn, and dominated the midfield battle. Sea Lake scored the first four goals of the match before Lions full-forward Steve Stroobants kick started his side and they booted three in four minutes. The second quarter was an arm-wrestle, with Calder clawing back the margin to 10 points at half-time. Two quick goals to Stroobants and co-coach Jordan Humphreys gave the Lions a narrow lead in the third term, but the Tigers roared back with five goals to one for the rest of the quarter. Amid the rain and gloom, the last term saw only three goals scored after Humphreys’ second briefly raised hopes of a late comeback for Calder.
Key defender Oscar Madden starred for the Lions along with veteran Boe Bish and Bears Lagoon Serpentine recruit Justin Laird. Stroobants finished with four goals on a tough day for forwards, taking him to 36 goals for the season, equal with the Tigers’ Max Cahoon, who was held goalless by Madden. Former co-coach Billy McInnes kicked five for the winners. Teams begin to play each other for the second time, with Sea Lake Nandaly travelling to Birchip Watchem and Calder a trip to Wedderburn.
