DISTRICT-OWNED thoroughbred Steparty has secured two wins in his recent Tasmania campaign at some of the state’s best race days.
A win in the Hobart Cup 1400-metre Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes broke an 87- day drought out of the winner’s circle for the five-year-old gelding who commenced his career with five straight wins as a two and three-year-old.
Steparty has been competing at an elite level of racing in Group one and two races against quality racehorses and honouring his owners with seconds, thirds and fourths in some of the best days racing in Australia.
The Hobart victory was followed up on Launceston Cup day last week when Steparty won the Listed BWS Hellova Street Stakes (1600 m).
John Allen was the successful jockey on both occasions with his calm and confident manner providing the guidance Steparty needed to get him back into the winner’s circle.
Steparty has stayed in Tasmania over the fortnight at Whisper Sands Seven Mile beach under the guidance of Holly McKechnie who trains the horse with Paul Preusker her partner.
Born and bred at Bolangumhills Gre Gre by part owner Greg Baldwin, other co-owners of the thoroughbred include St Arnaud’s Dave and Karen Russ, Damian Drum, Peter Knight, Glenn Wellard along with Mel Telford (Dunolly) Greg McNulty (Benalla), Brent and Alicia Gibbson, Phil and Leanne Heatherington (Bendigo). “Steparty has provided all us owners with an unbelievable racing experience. All the owners love to go to the races and watch him run,” Baldwin said.
“Steparty is an excellent horse who has taken us to three states in some of the best races on offer. It is really good to be back in the winner’s circle.
“He has been so good is so many quality races it’s great to see him get the chocolates in Tasmania”.
And what is next for Steparty who has his winning form back.?
“A week is a long time in horse racing but we are hoping he can make the All Star Mile at Flemington on Saturday,” Baldwin said.
“It will be a tough race but myself and Paul Preusker Racing would love to give him the opportunity.”
