One upset among predicdable pool results this round

ROUND 13 of the 2026 season of the Inter-Hotels Pool Competition concluded with two predictable results and one upset.
This was to occur at the Parisian quarter of our village on the 237th anniversary of the day the guillotine commenced severing royal and other prominent craniums during the French revolution.
The home side, the Farmers’ Arms One, prepared for the advancing would-be executioners, the Country Club One team without the protection of any Welsh wizardry.
But the match was to be on level pegging at the end of the first round as the Farmers’ Gorrie siblings, Ned and George, had sharpened their cues against the Club’s captain Paul Mullins and teammate Dan Harkin.
All while Troy Shields and Des Moulday had dealt in a similar fashion with Hayden Perry and Geoff Watts.
The second round was to be a partial triumph for the rebels.
But Paul squared his duel with Ned and the talking magpies, Heckle and Jeckle, cackled away gleefully as they severed noggins of Hayden and Geoff fell in to the collection basket.
Their elation was to be premature as the fallen enemy were soon to be joined by their compatriot, Dan, as George extracted revenge for his brother.
With the match teetering on the edge of disaster for the Farmers’ Boys, it was now the duty of the Mean Machine’s Captain Paul to deliver the coup-de-grace by running his cue through Ned in the only frame required in the third round, thus elevating them to an unassailable position in the match.
The quasi beheadings were to cease in the doubles however as the fractured Farmers were to salvage some honour by winning both of the doubles leaving the Meanies to withdraw, having taken the match by six games to five.
Out in the wilds of the Avoca Forest, the boys from the Pub in the Scrub hosted the Sporting Club One team.
There was to be a similar scoreline at the end of the first round of singles as, boosted by the return of the newlyweds, Tim Wright got the Sporties off to a good start against Ben Pell.
But the honeymoon was soon over as he failed to trouble the scorer again while Cheyenne Wright was also unsuccessful against Stephen Rodger, being eliminated in straight sets.
There was to be no bliss either for the Club’s Dayle Pitt when he was tipped out of the celebratory sulky by Shaun McNaulty.
It was left to Jesse Cook to provide a modicum of solace for his team by retiring Jacob Vanreren to the comfort of the bar.
Tim then teamed up unsuccessfully with Mitch Glidden against Ben and Stephen.
Jesse and Dayle rounded out the night with victory over Jacob and Drew Gray, the match going to the Loganites by eight games to five.
On this day 60 years’ ago, U.S Marines and South Vietnamese troops commenced Operation Hastings, an attempt to oust North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces from the Demilitarized Zone. On this night, the Farmers’ Arms Two team launched Operation No-Bare-Bums-or-Threepeat-Whitewashings when they assaulted the devastating Diggers in their own redoubt at the RSL.
At the end of the first round it appeared they may be in more strife than a Telstra director as Mitch Phillips, Sam and Kyle Postlethwaite and Dave Russ all remained online against Jack Swanton, Luke Pole, Bianca Cannon and Alayne Cunningham.
But at the top of the second round the cheers reverberated throughout the building when Jack removed the monkey from their backs with a tense, black-ball win over Mitch.
Luke was to be eliminated by Sam in the next frame but there was to be more excited exuberance from Alayne’s Amazons when bubbly Bianca Cannon outgunned Kyle.
They had expended all of their data as Dave Russ had to use yet another of his extensive supply of get-out-of-gaol cards to overcome an extremely unlucky Alayne who squandered a golden opportunity for victory in their final frame.
Luke and Bianca then fought a losing battle in the first of the doubles against Mitch and Sam.
Kyle and Dave completed the near virtuoso performance against Jack and Alayne to improve their percentage yet again with a ten games to two success.
