No surprises, close matches in pool competition
THERE were to be no surprises nor close matches in round eight of the Inter-Hotels Pool Competition as three of the top four sides interacted with the underlings below them on the ladder while the Diggers, with the bye, enjoyed the evening off.

The biggest win of the night was to be attained in the home of derby of the round, played at the Farmers’ Arms Hotel
The heroes and heroines of last week’s triumphant Farmers’ Arms Two side were unceremoniously returned to terra firma by their co-tenants Farmers’ Arms One with their captain Leigh Watkins leading from the front.
He demolished Luke Pole while his teammates Ned Gorrie, Hayden Perry and Geoff Watts wielded their cues in a similar scintillating fashion against Jack Hodges, Bianca Cannon and Alayne Cunningham.
When Leigh and Ned secured the first of the doubles encounters against Jack and Alayne, the spectre of another whitewash hovered over the hapless Twos.
But the supernumerary illumination of the King’s Avenue night sky was to be avoided when Hayden and Geoff handed the final doubles match to Bianca and Luke with a foul on the black ball, the Ones triumphant by nine games to one.
The as-yet unconquered cocky Country Two team partook of the journey to the Pub in the Scrub to take on the Loganites, still smarting after their shock submission last week to the cellar-dwellers.
But there was to be no reprieve as Ben Pell and Shaun McNaulty were to lose their opening frames to Harley Durward and Will Jackson respectively.
Jacob Vanrenen executed a temporary hiatus in the blood-letting in his opening frame against Jake Male, however Stephen Rodger was to go down to Grant Doyle and the haemorrhaging was to return at the top of the second round.
This would eventually prove to be fatal as Harley and Will sutured up their matches against Ben and Shaun
Meanwhile, Jake brought his to equilibrium with Jacob before completing the assignment in the third round. Stephen managed to restore some Loganite pride with an eventual victory against Grant, but wins in each of the doubles contests saw the Country Club Two depart the wilds of the Avoca Forest after a comfortable nine games to three triumph.
The grazing marsupials and other nocturnal creatures performing their nightly rituals in the now-lush expanses of the Country Club were treated to a similar scoreline when the Country Cup One side hosted the Sporting Club combination.
Mean Machine captain Paul Mullins got the balls rolling against Jesse Cook before Troy Shields temporarily lowered his colours to Mitch Glidden.
However Dan Harkin and Des Moulday were to round out the first round of singles battles with wins over Cheyenne Vogler and Dayle Pitt respectively.
At the top of the second round Paul retired Jesse to the bar, but Dan and Cheyenne fought back to level their contests and Des invited Sporties skipper Dayle to join Jesse.
Troy was to put the result beyond doubt when he eliminated Mitch however Cheyenne was to break through for her first victory of the season when she prevailed against Dan.
With the doubles now a mere formality, Paul and Dan teamed up to take the first of these against Jesse and Mitch.
While Heckle and Jeckle wiped away the tears and dark thoughts, brought about by the Demons’ demise of their beloved Magpies in the King’s birthday match, to dismiss Dayle and Cheyenne, her meditations now drifting to the world of her forthcoming tying of the nuptials.
This win saw the Club One victorious by nine games to three.
