Love on field: former Saints' surprise proposal after hockey
Former St Arnaud player Kate Gifford had the surprise of her life when her partner James Paley dropped to one knee following an intense short corner.

EMOTIONS were high on Saturday afternoon at Lord Nelson Park’s hockey field - but not just because the Women’s game ended in a close draw.
Former St Arnaud player Kate Gifford had the surprise of her life when her partner James Paley dropped to one knee following an intense short corner.
“Oh my god!” She exclaimed as her Calder United goalie partner knelt in front of her asking her to marry him.
The pair met two years ago after knowing of each other at their respective hockey clubs - St Arnaud for Gifford and Birchip Watchem for Paley.
With hockey a major part of both of their lives, an on-field proposal was the best decision.
“He’s been nervous all week,” friend of the couple and Calder United teammate Laura Harrison said.
“We knew this is when he wanted to do it, but weren’t sure if he would go through with it knowing it was going to be a draw.
“There was a lot going on, but it was so amazing to be a part of.”
The crowd of both St Arnaud and Calder United players and supporters were stunned but so excited when Gifford ultimately said yes.
“I picked this game because St Arnaud is still family to Kate and she has so many friends there still,” Paley said.
