Laughs fill CFA shed on tour
Laughter filled the shed as the students visited the St Arnaud fire station last Wednesday, with firefighters John Goode and captain David Reynolds giving them the full experience.
YOUNGSTERS in St Arnaud got a taste of what it’s like to be on the front line of a fire emergency during their special visit last week.
And it’s safe to say it wasn’t just the little ones from St Arnaud Early Learning Centre that enjoyed it.
Laughter filled the shed as the students visited the St Arnaud fire station last Wednesday, with firefighters John Goode and captain David Reynolds giving them the full experience.
Mr Reynolds said the Kinder students heard a smoke alarm go off and practiced how to Crawl Down Low and Go, Go Go in a smokey building.
“They saw the firefighting uniform that the firefighters wear, and we spoke with the Communications Centre (FireCOM) on the fire station radio.”
But the big highlight was seeing the trucks.
“The kids had the chance to climb through the pumper and see the flashing lights in action,” Mr Reynolds said.
“However, it was squirting the hose from our tanker which was the favoured activity.
“All students (and staff) had the chance to show off their firefighting skills.
“And to top off the day, we activated the station siren.”
Mr Reynolds said it was visits like these that helped open the door to what the brigade does and how they work.
He said this is something they like the community being able to see.
“It is always a pleasure to interact with any of our community, but especially the kids,” he said.
“Having the opportunity to see them have fun but take away some very important fire safety education messages does nothing but benefit them, and our community in the long run.”
Mr Reynolds said the St Arnaud Fire Brigade thanked the St. Arnaud Early Learning Centre for this fantastic visit.
“The Brigade also gives thanks for the lovely, framed photo that was presented to us,” he said.
“It is thought that the firefighters enjoyed the day almost as much as you did.”
