MARNOO and Birchip delivered a high-quality late-season showdown at Marnoo Recreation Reserve on Saturday, a clash that had all the makings of a potential grand final preview as the competition’s two heavyweights locked horns ahead of the semi-finals.

With Marnoo sitting atop the Wimmera Mallee association ladder and Birchip Swans close behind, the encounter carried genuine finals intensity from the opening over.

Batting first, Birchip Swans endured an early scare as Marnoo struck twice inside the opening overs to leave the visitors reeling at 2/7.

What followed, however, was a determined recovery that showcased the Swans’ premiership credentials.

William Marks steadied the innings with a composed 33, while Riley Doran shifted the momentum dramatically with an electrifying counterattack.

Doran’s 67 from just 38 balls featured powerful stroke play and aggressive intent, dragging the contest back into the Swans’ favour and lifting the scoring rate at a crucial stage.

Support through the middle order ensured the rebuilding effort held firm, with Lachy Randall adding a valuable 33 as Birchip Swans progressed to a competitive total of 10/175.

Marnoo’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout, Cooper Reading finishing with three wickets while Darcy Cameron and David Lang provided key breakthroughs to prevent the innings from accelerating further.

Marnoo’s reply began steadily, but it was Dylan Shelley who ultimately stamped his authority on the contest with one of the standout innings of the summer.

Combining controlled aggression with clean striking, Shelley blasted an unbeaten 79 from only 49 deliveries, an innings that swung momentum firmly toward the ladder leaders.

Earlier contributions through the order laid the platform, allowing Shelley to accelerate through the latter stages of the chase as Marnoo reached 8/179 to seal a hard-fought victory.

Despite the loss, Birchip demonstrated why they loom as a major finals threat.

Their ability to recover from early trouble and remain competitive deep into the match highlighted a resilience that could prove crucial .
