Herbertson brings a win home
At Horsham on Monday, the six-year-old mare Fremarks Peggy started as a $1.75 favourite and easily accounted for her opposition in the 2200m standing start event winning by 10.6m.
WHILST the highlight of harness racing in Victoria last week was undoubtedly the fourteen winners for the week for the leading state driver James Herbertson the effort of the Youngson and McNamara stable to win three races with their small team of trotters is worthy of acclaim.
At Horsham on Monday, the six-year-old mare Fremarks Peggy started as a $1.75 favourite and easily accounted for her opposition in the 2200m standing start event winning by 10.6m.
Two races later the Tarah and Jack McNamara owned Poppy Popstar, $1.25 fav, bought up her twelfth lifetime win when she won the 2200m mobile event by 26.5m.
Second in that race was the stablemate Champagnes who was driven by Nick Youngson.
The Berrimal stable’s third winner for the week was at the Maryborough Cup meeting on Sunday where Fremarks Peggy won her second race for the week when she started as a $1.07 favorite and rated 1.59.9 in a 1690m mobile event to win by 2.6m.
The winning driver on the three occasions was J Herbertson who with five months of the season completed has driven 157 winners.
The expectations of a landmark edition of the Cup itself fell flat with the race being as exciting as watching paint dry.
At Bendigo on Wednesday the Charlton trained Zoom Zoom Boom was successful for the Stephen and Connor Clarke stable when after doing plenty of work in the run it was able to win by 3.3m from another Charlton pacer, the Mark Boyle trained Sporting Rage.
The winner is from the great race mare Pelicanrama who won an incredible fifty-five races and $730,271 in prizemoney for her owner M Edwards and trainer P Manning.
At Melton on Saturday the Swan Hill owned, John Tormey trained King Saint made it two wins from two starts for its new stable when it took out race four of the seven race programme.
The driver this time was Jack Laugher who after being caught wide early in the race took the gelding around the field into the lead.
Then after appearing to be headed in the straight by Insider Trading and Ryan Sanderson the winner fought back to get the judge’s nod by a head in a creditable 1.55.8 for the 1720m sprint.
The first and second horses started equal favourites at $3.10.
