GOLF: Course’s champions keep coming

THE Driscoll Douglas East Veteran’s Golf was a hot contest, with 74 players taking to the course last week.

The event was the annual Wimmera versus Kara Kara, Peter Kelly shield day. This event was held at Donald, in cold, heavy but fine conditions.

Kara Kara won the shield 332 to Wimmera 302, a good old fashion flogging.

The daily event winner in Division 1 was taken out by Trevor Baldock from St Arnaud with 35 points.

Runner up with 35 points as well was Kerry Raven of Donald, Bill Rodger from St Arnaud was third with 34 points.

Division two was won by Keith Clarke with 34 points, Keith Lewis from Wedderburn was runner up with 33 points, and John Goode from St Arnaud was third with 31 points.

Division 3 winner was Terry Tyler from Murtoa, Kate Clark from Donald was runner up with 33 points from Dexter Schilling from Rainbow with 29 points.

St Arnaud golf

IT WAS a big weekend at the Country club with golf on Saturday and the last round of the championships on Sunday.

Saturday saw 15 players enjoy beautiful sunshine and ideal conditions with the course in outstanding condition.

The winner was this weeks best player in the Jackson house with Ivan having a very impressive 39 points to win the St Arnaud physio best score of the day.

Bill Rodger was runnerup with a fine 36 points from Sam Postlethwaite on 34.

It won’t be long before Sam’s handicap comes down significantly.

Nearest the pins were Sam Postlethwaite on the 6th, Tubby Drendel on the 8th, Bill Rodger on the 10th and Lindsay Baldock on the Weirs IGA 18th.

One match was played in the 4BBB knockout with Ernie Scilini and Bill Rodger just holding out Tubby Drendel and Chris Campbell on the 18th.

Sundays competition saw 22 players contest a stroke round.

In A Grade, nine out of the 11 players played off single figure handicaps which doesn’t happen very often.

Winner was Jake Male with 74/6/68 just two = ahead of little brother Sam on 81/11/70 with Scott Wright on 76/4/72.

Jake’s 68 net also gave him the Physiotherapy best score of the day.

In B Grade, the old master Peter Martin had an excellent 84/15/69 ahead of Sam Postlethwaite on 88/16/72 and Lindsay Baldock third with 87/15/72.

Nearest the pins were Lindsay Baldock on the 6th, Charlie Ferguson on the 8th,Ballarat visitor Tim Griffith on the 10th and another visitor Brad Juke on the 18th.

In the battle for club champion, Craig Burn held a six stroke lead going into the last round.

Jake Male made some inroads but fell four strokes short making Craig Burn 2026 club champion with Jake Male runnerup and Scott Wright 3rd.

In B Grade Lindsay Baldock held on to his three stroke lead over Sam Postlethwaite to win the trophy with Peter Martin 3rd.

The real contest was in C grade with Charlie Ferguson holding a 1 shot lead.

Trevor Stewart stormed home to win from Charlie by three shots with the ever steady Ernie Scilini 3rd.

The prestigious Duff Cup for the best net score over the three rounds of the championship went to Jake Male with a convincing win.

With the Country Club annual wood auction on the 11th of July a working bee will be on next Sunday morning at Bill Rodger’s place so bring your trailers, utes and chainsaws.

If don’t have those things bring your muscles.

ANOTHER small field of ladies played in a Stableford event at the Country Club last Wednesday.

Winner was Alison Fahey with 29 pts on a count back from Sharyn Erwin and Brenda Proctor.

Nearest the pin winners were Sharyn on the 6th and 8th and 18th Alison. Next week is Association day and Champions of Champions day at Donald on Thursday July 9.

Charlton golf

MATT McGurk led from start to finish to take out his fourth Charlton golf Championship on Sunday.

Matt was awarded the prized ‘Les Mays’ trophy with a three round score of 82-88-87=257 and held his nerve to withstand a late charge from defending champion Wayne Southwell 95-85-80=260.

B Grade winner was Club President Jamey Soulsby who produced a personal best finishing round 93-90-83=266 to gather in the leading group and receive the ‘Bob Wescott’ trophy.

Mark Hamley finished runner up with a 272 total.

C Grade winner was Jed Thompson who also produced his best final round score of 103-99-87=289, worked his way past the favourites and won comfortably from Ian Jenkins and Jeff Cox, both on 297 total.

Best 3 nets:

A Grade: Clinton Olive 75-77-73=225.

B Grade: Ric Walklate 71-72-80=223

C Grade: Jeff Cox80-71-71=222

Luth Cup winner for two best nets: Jamey Soulsby 77-66=139

Erwin Cup winner for improved Handicap: Jamey Soulsby, HCP 22 down to 19.

Results Daily Competition 27 players entered.

Division 1: Jamey Soulsby net 66. Runner up Wayne Southwell 69, Chris Mathew’s 76, Troy Heenan 76 on c/b Anthony Hargreaves & John Headon.

Division 2: Jed Thompson 65, runner up Jasper Walsh 68, Jeff Cox 71, Brendan Bailey 74, Jeff McLoughlan 76, Brodie Grylls 76.

Nearest the Pins: 2nd Matt McGurk, 7th A Hargreaves, 14, J. Thompson

A large gathering enjoyed the presentation dinner sharing a delicious casserole tea.
