THE Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit (LMPHU) is urging the community to check their measles vaccination status following a rise in cases across Victoria and Australia.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world.

One infected person can spread the virus to up to 18 other people.

LMPHU Clinical Unit Head Dr Simon Crouch said measles is significantly more infectious than COVID-19 and can spread very quickly where vaccination coverage is incomplete.

“Two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine provides the best way to ensure immunity,” he said.

The virus spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes and can remain in the air for up to two hours.

In some people, measles can cause serious complications including pneumonia and inflammation of the brain, known as encephalitis.

Measles cases have increased significantly over the past two years.

In 2024, 57 cases were reported in Australia, rising to 181 in 2025. So far in 2026, 56 cases have been reported, including 17 in Victoria.

Dr Crouch said adults born between 1966 and 1992 are at increased risk as they may have received only one dose and are often unsure of their vaccination history.

People born overseas are also at higher risk of being under-immunised.

“It is safe to receive an additional MMR dose if vaccination records are missing or uncertain,” Dr Crouch said.

The LMPHU is working with local services to provide free MMR vaccinations across the region.

The MMR vaccination is available through local healthcare providers for eligible people, although an administration or consultation fee may apply.
