ST Arnaud Botanicals is on a mission to make changes in the mindsets of florists - be as local and sustainable as possible.

This is the message within owner Megan Osborne’s latest workshop over the weekend.

Participants spent two hours in the Raillery Gallery community room on Sunday learning to hand-tie a bouquet of natives.

For Ms Osborne, it was beautiful to see how even when you use the same flowers, each product is different.

“The ladies had a lovely time at the workshop with lots of fun and laughter, especially at themselves trying to hold the bouquets together as it is quite a difficult skill,” she said. “It was a lovely morning, with time just to be ourselves, relax and enjoy the company of others while honing in on our creative side.

“The native flowers are local, seasonal blooms from our flower farm, a native farm in Horsham and the proteas were provided by Belinda from her trees in St Arnaud - it can’t get more local than that.

“This is part of our philosophy to change the florist industry to only use as local and seasonal as possible, naturally grown, chemical free fresh blooms.

“Not flowers flown in from overseas which are available from wholesalers that are sprayed and dyed by workers who earn next to nothing.

Ms Osborne said her farm was developing, with close to a 1000 plants that have been planted up to the Autumn just gone.

“We have more plans to plant more in spring,” she said.

“Autumn is the optimum time to plant natives.”
