IT was all about celebrating real and figurative families on Friday as Cabbaritta CWA put on an afternoon tea for Mother’s Day.

East Wimmera Health Service’s Charlton campus is full of past CWA members, so holding the event there was a no-brainer according to CWA member Maria Perger said.

“They all feel like part of the family now,” she said.

“For us, it’s about making sure these residents don’t feel alone in the nursing home, whether they were part of the CWA or not.

“It’s our mission to make people feel seen.”

The nursing home’s dining room was full of laughter, smiles and a delicious homemade afternoon tea provided by EWHS staff and the CWA.

CWA members sat among residents and their families and shared memories and stories as they ate.

Ms Perger said it was lovely to see so much happiness in one room.

She said it was events like these that showed how important groups like the CWA are to smaller communities.

“We’re down to 12 members now and looking for more, maybe even some young blood to keep us going,” Ms Perger said.

“At the heart of it, we’re trying to run outreach programs like these to enrich the lives of our residents and ensure the CWA branch in Charlton continues to build community values within the heart of much loved town.”

CWA Secretary Liz Richardson said the team may have been small, but they were mighty.

“Since the beginning of the year alone we’ve clocked up 842 hours of volunteering across town,” she said.

“And we don’t just provide morning teas, we source handmade gifts for each baby born, raise funds for fire victims, provide scholarships for students at both the schools in town and so much more.”
