IF THERE were any doubts that Sea Lake’s new coaching combination of Wade Donnan and Boyd Bailey could work, they were dispelled in a commanding win over last year’s grand finalists Birchip Watchem.

Bailey, newly arrived from coaching at Morwell and a premiership in the Northern Territory, was best on the ground for the Tigers, while dual Feeny Medal winner Donnan was his usual brilliant self.

Sea Lake won by 31 points, 10.11 to 6.4, as the Bulls fell away after half-time in Saturday’s opening round.

A six-point margin at the long break blew out with six goals to two in the second half.

The loss of key forward Ben Edwards, who kicked 233 goals in two seasons with Birchip Watchem, was keenly felt among a number of big-name departures.

Max Cahoon kicked four for the winners, while former AFL player Robin Nahas booted one on debut.

Last year’s best and fairest winner Ben Lakin stood out for the Bulls in his key defensive role, and recruit Ricardo Liparota kicked three goals.

Birchip Watchem meets Calder this Saturday.
