AS THE heat continued on Friday’s catastrophic fire danger day, shop owners in Charlton hurried to keep their belongings safe while a fire burned in the main street.

A shed and caravan were caught up in the wrath of a fire that started behind a vacant shop in High Street.

At least nine fire crews were called to a structure fire at around 11.43pm, but managed to have it all under control within half an hour.

A witness, who happened to be in the shop next door at the time, said they could smell smoke from there.

At that time, it wasn’t clear what can caught on fire, but they could see the smoke and that it could have been moving towards the Charlton hospital in Learmonth Street.

They said the surrounding businesses like the newsagency and flooring company were preparing for the worst, collecting items in their stores and moving them out.

Thankfully, fire crews quickly managed to get the fire under control and contain it to the two structures behind the shopfront.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t over yet for the Charlton CFA as they were called back out to the scene of the Five-Mile Road fire which destroyed one home back before Christmas last year.

People in town said they could see smoke and dust moving around out on that fire ground, but thankfully any potential for further burning was put out quickly.

Crews continued to monitor this situation over the Christmas/New Year period and were called to multiple small flare ups or smouldering trees across the already burnt area.

They will continue to montior the site.
