THE LATEST episode in a podcast series is set to help farmers set themselves up financially after a tough season.

The AgriDetective podcast series, produced and hosted by Gooroc farmer Janine Batters, will feature s Planfarm Advisory’s Farm Business Advisor Dan Toohey.

He is set to share his top tips to ensure the damage from a tough farming season is minimised and doesn’t impede future good decisions.

“When we talk about profitability with growers, generally the thinking is: to be profitable, you have to cut costs. It’s actually not the case.,” Mr Toohey said.

“The most important driver of profitability is how do we maximise income off every hectare every year?

“To do that means we need to have the confidence in having a plan, executing the plan and spending the money in the right places that we know translate through to a greater chance of generating that income.”

Mr Toohey encourages producers to ‘rip the band-aid off early’- to know the business figures and understand them to ensure decisions are based on profitability not emotions.

He also shines light on the importance of noticing the positives that have gone well within the business.

“It’s hard, but it’s the silver linings that help drive the engine room of a farm business,” he said.

“To say yes, it’s been a tougher year and yes, there’s some things that haven’t gone our way but next year we’re still going to set up with our plan and if we do get that good spring rain etc we know if we execute that game plan, we’re going to be in a much better place and a much stronger position.”

The episode is the third of the AgriDetective podcast which aims to build the understanding of the Australian agricultural industries and its opportunities.

Other episodes include Cracking the code of growing lentils with Dr Jason Brand and Nitrogen innovation at farmers’ fingertips with Dr Charlie Day.
