CHARLTON Harness Racing Club held their annual Djaara Cup meeting on Friday with the Cup being won by the three-year-old filly Hellava Deal who was trained and driven by her owner Aaron Dunn from Horsham.

Aaron bred the filly from his mare Madazhell who was by the USA sire Albert Albert and who raced eighty-six times for seven wins and twenty-three placings.

The local highlight of the meeting was the return to the sulky on raceday by Charlton trainer Zac Steenhuis who drove the Gavan Holt owned three-year-old gelding No Shenaniganz to victory in the Heenan’s Newsagency Maiden Trot.

Having only its second race start, he broke gait when making his debut, the son of Pastor Stephen is from Miss Sweden who is a half-sister to the top performer Aldebaran Zeus who has won twenty-three races and $599,017 in prize money.

Steenhuis, who had not had a race drive since the 2024 season, took his horse straight to the front from barrier four at the start and although racing greenly at times during the 2100m event was too strong at the finish to win by a neck.

Charlton driver Conner Clarke was the other winner for the week when he drove Midnight Pirate to victory for Irymple trainer Boris Devcic at the Ouyen Cup meeting on Sunday.

Conner is slowly adding to his season’s tally as he settles into the Training Centre and his team adapts to their surroundings.

This week HRV have moved things around with Mildura being moved to Friday night and Melton taking the daytime slot.
