CHARLTON College’s Foundation to Year 6 classes had a literal taste of culture as they marked Chinese New Year on Monday.

The students welcomed the Year of the Fire Horse alongside many parents who joined in the festivities.

College vice principal Kim Fitzpatrick said the school community embraced the occasion, with students and staff dressed in red attire symbolising good fortune and happiness.

“The day provided a rich cultural experience, with students learning about the significance of tea in Chinese culture,” she said.

The students were introduced to different varieties of tea leaves and explored the customs surrounding the pouring and tasting of tea.

Students sampled four different types of tea, served in traditional Chinese teacups, and enjoyed a range of authentic snacks.

“The tasting session was a highlight, giving students the opportunity to experience new flavours while learning about cultural traditions,”

The celebration also featured a showcase of traditional Chinese costumes, with students invited to dress up and learn about the history and meaning behind the garments.

Students explored the different varieties of rice and their uses in everyday cooking.

Students were shown how to make rice balls — a treat that quickly became a favourite.

“The celebration was a meaningful and engaging way for students and families to come together,” Mrs Fitzpatrick said.

“It’s about fostering cultural understanding and appreciation within the school community.”
