Business underpins the broad ribbons

“And with a lineup of guest speakers and a strong trade display covering animal health, husbandry and handling we’re pretty sure it would be a complete day out.”

WHEN you’re in Marnoo, broad ribbons might be beautiful but according to Trent Carter, the bottom line is what the wool and sheep business is all about.

And with the annual Victorian State Merino Field Day set for August 18, the Marnoo Field Day Group president, from Wallaloo Park Merinos and Poll Merinos, reckons with both markets surging the biggest interest will be accessing the best possible genetics to take advantage of that.

Trent says although the day includes the annual Victorian State Merino Ram Hogget that is only a small part of the action.

“In 2025 we had almost 40 studs participating, and on the back of current conditions we are hopeful we might do even better than that,” Trent explains. “We are only open from 10am-4pm but had 600 people on site last year and with our industry so buoyant we expect to top that.”

“And with a lineup of guest speakers and a strong trade display covering animal health, husbandry and handling we’re pretty sure it would be a complete day out.”

Trent says there will not be a better opportunity for people looking to possibly change direction with their production strategy, confirm they are on the right track or discuss what they are doing with either their wool or meat programs.

He says the Marnoo event is just three hours from the Riverina, from the coast and is close to South Australia. Even the higher rainfall areas of eastern Victoria are close to make this an unparalleled opportunity.

“This could turn out to be the best day trip of your life, getting access to some of the best genetics the industry has to offer,” Trent says. “People should consider next-generation genetics as the valuable long-term investment they are and with the brilliant season we have been having, the rams will be in peak condition.

“Lamb scanning figures have also been exceptional by all accounts, and we anticipate ram demand will be there to match that.

“Sales kick off in early August and normally run through to early October, and our field day is the perfect opportunity to start putting together the shopping list you will need for your next joining and your long-term strategy.”

In the 2025 Victorian State Merino Ram Hogget competition the winner was Glendonald, which took a standout team to the event. Terrick West came second, with Orrie Cowie in third.

The Marnoo Field Day Group has also been running an entry fundraiser for several years – last year it saw more than $2000 donated with proceeds going to Are You Bogged Mate?, which helps tackle mental health challenges in the bush and reminding men it’s OK to ask for help.
