BIRCHIP Watchem’s 187-point win over Charlton was sadly emblematic of the Navy Blues’ season.

Charlton on Saturday could manage only two goals against the Bulls in a match that saw Navies’ youngster Ethan Soulsby make his senior debut.

Twenty goals to one after half-time highlighted Birchip Watchem’s dominance, with Ricardo Liparota (seven goals) and Rhona Conboy (six) feasting in front of the sticks.

Charlton kicked the first goal of the second quarter through Xav Tadd and the last of the third quarter through Jed Thompson, but were scoreless in the opening and final terms.

The win virtually sewed up fourth spot on the ladder for the Bulls, who are 10 pointsahead of St Arnaud with just three games remaining.

A win this week over Donald, and defeat for St Arnaud against Wedderburn, would end the Saints’ chase for the finals.

The Bulls’ had 12 goalkickers on the day, with Zane Connick, Daniel Bell, Ben Lakin and Mac Lewis joining Liparota and Conboy as multiple scorers.

Jeff Debast and the ever-reliable Ben Lanyon were best for Charlton, which finishes off the year with matches against Boort, St Arnaud and Wedderburn.

Birchip Watchem’s score of 30.21 was the third time this season that the Navies have conceded more than 200 points.

Only twice have they been beaten by less than 100 points, including the match against Boort when Brownlow medallist Dane Swan and two other stars played for them one a one-off basis.

Incredibly, former Melbourne AFL player James Magner, who kicked six goals against the Magpies, is Charlton’s equal top goalscorer for the season.
