SWIFT action from a large group of experienced fighters was all it took to get a header fire under control over the weekend.

Local brigades were called to a header fire that was spreading into a paddock near Gre Gre at around 4.20pm on Saturday afternoon.

Multiple units from St Arnaud made up the list of at least nine tankers converging on the scene to try to get the blaze under control.

“An amazing effort of firefighting by the initial private units as well as the first tankers on scene saw the fire well contained by the time that we arrived,” they said.

“A comment made by one of our crew on the way home was “thank goodness this didn’t happen yesterday’.”

He was right as the wind from Friday would have “been more difficult to pull up”.

The fire was contained quickly and firefighters then assisted with blacking out operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished before being released from the scene.

St Arnaud CFA reminded residents to download and keep an eye on the VicEmergency app and call Triple Zero (000) in case of an emergency.
