“I’M just a hairdresser that loves flowers, but I’m not a florist.”

Meagan Harvey has hit the jackpot with what makes her heart sing as she combines her two of her many loves - flowers and helping others - into one new business venture.

Top of the Town Blooms won’t stop Mrs Harvey from hairdressing, it will just make her extra time at the Napier Street salon a little bit more enjoyable.

“It’s always been a love of mine, and my mum loved flowers, so it’s a piece of her too,” she said.

“This place actually used to be a florist, so it seems like it was meant to be.”

But it wasn’t till an age-old question was asked of her did she finally have the confidence to bring her dream to life.

“My brother and sister-in-law were both in the police force and have since changed, they asked me “what would you do if you retrained?” Mrs Harvey said.

“I said I would become a florist and they told me I should do it. So I went to the Geelong Flower Farm, bought $150 worth of flowers and hoped I hadn’t just made a mistake.”

Mrs Harvey took the flowers home, put them into a number of arrangements to sell online.

They were sold that day.

“I think it was the confidence I needed to actually do it,” she said.

“My husband has always encouraged me, I know that, but I just lacked the self-confidence to actually do it.”

“You never know if it will work until it does.”

Now she has fun with it.

“I wanted to get creative, so every Friday I do something fun,” Mrs Harvey said.

“I started off doing Free Flower Friday, where I literally stuck little bunches on the front window for people to take.

“Then I asked people to send me in the name of someone who they they thought deserved a bunch of flowers. I got 180 responses.

But her most recent little venture has turned into something a bit more meaningful.

“I had a man come in saying he wanted to buy flowers for his wife,” Mrs Harvey said.

“I asked what kinds she liked, he didn’t know. I asked what her favourite colour was, he didn’t know.

“So I’ve started Fact Finding Friday where I asked people to tell me information about what their partner, their friend, their mum likes and I’ve started a notebook behind the counter.

“So no one has to wonder again hopefully.”

For Mrs Harvey, it’s more than just flowers.

“People buy flowers for so many different occasions - for Mother’s Day, for their spouse as an anniversary, to say sorry to someone, when someone has passed,” she said.

“It’s an honour to be a part of all of those stories.”

You can call Mrs Harvey at Top of the Town Blooms for a number of different sized arrangements, different flower types, delivery and more.
