AT THE MOVIES: Ag show fundraiser and Wuthering Heights
Fancy a night at the flicks?

Weekend of Wuthering at Rex
A RE-IMAGINED version of Emily Bronte’s gothic masterpiece, “Wuthering Heights” is screening at the Rex Theatre Charlton this weekend.
Director Emerald Fennell takes the tortured passion of the protagonists Cathy Earnshaw (Margot Robbie) and Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi) and weaves a tale of intensity and seduction in this tumultuous story.
The tale of an all-consuming destructive bond between Cathy and Heathcliff is set against a backdrop of the bleak Yorkshire moors and covers the generational tragic consequences of their toxic passion.
Dispensing with elements of Bronte’s novel (the second half of the book, plus a number of characters), viewers who have read the original may feel short changed with the film moving away from the central element of vengeance and playing up the focus on “romance”.
Gaining unanimous praise, however, has been the stunning cinematography – both the evocative, brooding Yorkshire moors and the opulent (over-the-top?) mansion settings.
A stand-out performance by actor Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) as Cathy’s dissolute father, “Mr. Earnshaw” has also drawn considerable plaudits from reviewers and the movie-going public.
While patrons should be prepared for provocation, (labelled “50 Shades of Bronte” by one reviewer), this is a movie where a modern-day application – including contemporary music by British songwriter, Charli XCX – has created a new edge to the 1847 novel.
So set your sights on a session of escapism and head to The Rex to make your own mind about this enduring gothic tale.
“Wuthering Heights” (M | 136 minutes) will screen at The Rex on Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 2pm and Tuesday, March 24 at 8pm.
Moors to fundraise for in St Arnaud
IF YOU’RE in St Arnaud instead this weekend, you will have a chance to catch a flick too.
The St Arnaud Community Cinema will have a screening Fackham Hall on Saturday night, all in the name of raising money for a worthy cause.
From 7.30pm, you can enjoy a supper and film to help the St Arnayd Agricultural Show.
Fackham Hall follows the story of Eric Noone, a pick-pocket and a kind-hearted man, who is tasked with delivering a letter to the Davenport Mansion.
Eric begins a forbidden romance with Rose Davenport, the lady of this posh English Manor.
When an unexpected murder occurs Eric gets framed, leaving Rose and her family’s future uncertain.
This movie stars Ben Radcliffe, Jimmy Carr, Thomasin McKenzie, Damian Lewis as they bring their best comedy performances to the screen.
